The novices celebrated Christmas with the sisters in the traditional Felician way. The roots of the community are Polish, and many of our traditions are, too. On Christmas Eve, we celebrated Wigilia, a meatless supper with nine items. There was hay strewn on the table to help us remember the poverty that Jesus was born into. We broke the wafer together, giving each other blessings and good wishes as we tore off a piece of each other's and ate it. We attended Christmas Eve Mass with the sisters, as well as Christmas Day Mass. Sister Heather Marie played "O Holy Night" on the clarinet for both Masses, and it was lovely.
Then most of the house scattered, to go home to visit our families. Despite the snow that was coming on the 26th, we all got to our families safely. We each enjoyed visits with our families, and then with the sisters from our home areas. It was fun to visit with the sisters that I know from New Jersey, to catch up with and spend time with them. The central convent in Lodi had an Epiphany concert that was magnificent, and I got to sing with the choir! I helped sing the French verse of "Silent Night" and joined in on the others as I could.
