The novitiate community was saddened and moved by the plight of those who suffered from the tornado that struck Springfield, Mass. Springfield is just 9 miles from Enfield, and we know people who live in that general area. One day we went to one of the temporary shelters for those who were displaced from their homes. We talked to them, trying to be a compassionate presence for them. We also did some practical things, giving out food and cleaning the place up a little. It was touching for me to see the resiliency of the children who were staying at the shelter. They played, ate, and talked with such energy and joy. We attended a jubilee celebration; one of the sisters here has been in community for 25 years and had a Mass and dinner to celebrate it. We sang on the choir and helped pass out cake and take care of the guests at the dinner. It is inspiring for me as a young religious to see the dedication of our sisters. These days really show me this in a special way. The novices went to a barbecue at the Grayhouse, where we tutor English to immigrants and refugees. The other volunteers and some clients were there, too. The food was great and it was good to see everyone. It was especially nice for me, because I am leaving at the end of summer. The novices also attended the local chapter follow-up for the upcoming chapter meeting for the province. We discussed issues and concerns with the sisters, and listened to theirs. We will not be attending the chapter, so it was nice to be a part of it in this way. The postulants are with us for a week and a half for their orientation. They are taking classes and sharing meals and prayers with us. They are a spirited group of women who are a joy to have around. |
Follow me as I journey as a Felician Franciscan Sister. I am currently a classroom teacher and I love what I am doing. The juggle between my active life and my prayer life are slowly coming into rhythm. Hope you enjoy my little stories about my "life".
